Scientist - FRD Plankton Sorter
Ocean Associates, Inc. (OAI) is seeking a Scientist to provide support to the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). A scientist is needed to provide technical support for the Ichthyoplankton Ecology Program (IEP) in the Fisheries Resources Division (FRD) of Southwest Fisheries Science Center. The IEP analyzes plankton samples collected during CalCOFI and FRD research cruises to provide data on fish eggs and larvae and cephalopod paralarvae that are used to support biomass assessments, Integrated Ecosystem Assessment, and ecological and taxonomic studies. Lobster larvae also are sorted from the plankton samples and provided to California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists in support of state management of that species. The IEP supports FRD plankton and trawling research cruises as needed by providing personnel to serve as members of scientific crews aboard ship. This is an almost two-year position to evaluate Puget Sound salmon and steelhead harvest strategies. Over the next two years, state, tribal and federal managers will renegotiate harvest plans for Puget Sound steelhead and Puget Sound Chinook. These agreements are expected to span at least five years and include fisheries along the full migration corridor for salmon stocks returning to Puget Sound.
